Thanks, Alex!

You mention the "frequent" snowfall events you've been experiencing in the U.K. .. which reminded me that one of the things that boggled my mind when I first stepped onto this "battlefield" was encountering Viner's "children won't know what snow is ..."

You see, my recollection of my early childhood years in the U.K. (Birmingham and Llanelly) is that we very rarely had any snow - although I knew that there were other parts of the country that did..

IOW, it was a very (what we used to call) temperate climate, similar to that which persuaded me to "migrate" to the Lower Mainland of British Columbia - in the years before its politics became polluted by the likes of Andrew Weaver ;-)

Then, again, perhaps my memory just ain't what it used to be! And perhaps my recollection is somewhat coloured by the fact that when we emigrated, we landed in Sault Ste. Marie ... where winters are very, very cold ... and one gets lots and lots of the white stuff, as one does in other cities in which I resided before I relocated to the Best Coast!

In NZ, the methane from compost comes under our ETS, therefore there is a disincentive to put green waste in the council recycling.

There are some major flaws in the logic behind all this anyway. methane from rotting vegetation and also from ruminant animals is part of the natural carbon cycle. methane break down into CO2 and water after about 10 years, from whence it came in the first place.

Everyone uses the 21 figure for GWP but this seems to be based on one study only, referenced in IPCC literature, and is based on some rather esoteric calculations that have little to do with physical reality.

Food-waste receptacles (plastic "caddies") are being distributed to homes and workplaces in the UK as well; we've received a few from our local council. Your excellent and (as always) thorough investigation of BC's waste management has revealed a whiff of something somewhat more pungent than kitchen scraps! I haven't done the same due diligence yet, over here, but since we're now basically a province in the EU empire (synonymous for bureaucracy in the name of all things green) it wouldn't be too surprising to lift the lid on similar goings-on.

We have two large composters in our back garden, fortunately, so our kitchen waste can go directly to where it can do some good, rather than create a stink in the house. As for those plastic receptacles, I find they are very handy - for storing road salt to scatter on the ice in our driveway, when we have "rare and exciting" (but all too frequent, of late) snowfall events.

Good question, Rick. I don't know what the "market share" of ABC and BBC might be, but here in Canada, CBC seems to be experiencing "diminishing returns" which - in the eyes of some - is perceived as an "audience crisis". See:

Hey Hillary, for someone who gets upset about CBC 'censoring' your posts, [snip -hro]

Hilary: Listen, kiddo ... I'm very sorry that on your planet, whatever education you might have received has obviously failed to teach you:

a) Any manners

b) The meaning of "[...] I don’t intend to waste my time responding to [your] comment(s) [...]"

c) That there's a BIG difference between my posts on my own blog and any censored comment I might have made on a post by Canada's National Broadcaster - which no one has shown to be in violation of their submission guidelines. If you choose to think that there's some sort of equivalence here, then that's your problem, not mine!

I gave you the benefit of the doubt after your first "comment" - and an opportunity to clean up your act - by placing you on moderation. You chose not to.

This third "comment" of yours is no better. In fact, the word-count in your off-topic drivel couched in sneer 'n smear word salads has escalated from 43 to 92 to 140.

So that's three strikes ... You're out! Time to go find another playground to pollute with your silly thread-derailing games.

My blog, my rules. You don't like 'em? Tough nuggies, kid!

Hilary: Listen, kiddo … I’m very sorry that on your planet, whatever education you might have received has obviously failed to teach you:

a) Any manners

b) The meaning of “[...] I don’t intend to waste my time responding to [your] comment(s) [...]”

c) That there’s a BIG difference between my posts on my own blog and any censored comment I might have made on a post by Canada’s National Broadcaster – which no one has shown to be in violation of their submission guidelines. If you choose to think that there’s some sort of equivalence here, then that’s your problem, not mine!

I gave you the benefit of the doubt after your first “comment” – and an opportunity to clean up your act – by placing you on moderation. You chose not to.

This third “comment” of yours is no better. In fact, the word-count in your off-topic drivel couched in sneer ‘n smear word salads has escalated from 43 to 92 to 140.

So that’s three strikes … You’re out! Time to go find another playground to pollute with your silly thread-derailing games.

My blog, my rules. You don’t like ‘em? Tough nuggies, kid!
