Of papal communications, dispensations & commemorations

As a non-Catholic, I don’t feel particularly obliged to heed any papal pronunciations – least of all those he has uttered (most ill-advisedly, IMHO) on climate change and/or its perceived twin-sin™: The equally nebulous, albeit increasingly more-encompassing, “(un)sustainable development”.

YMMV, but I for one would be far more impressed with such Papal outpourings and edicts if they had included at the very least an equal level of concern regarding the fate of his flock at the hands of ISIS and/or Iran and/or many governments in the Arab block.

View from here is that his Holy naïveté seems to know no bounds. Believe it or not, it seems to extend even to the point of inviting Vancouver’s in-the-process-of-divorce (a Catholic no-no, to the best of my knowledge) Mayor as the sole Canadian representative to a confab he’s evidently convening somewhere on the planet later this month:

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson will be the only Canadian representative when he joins roughly 30 other local leaders from Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas for a two-day conference with Pope Francis on July 21.

This two-day conference may well pale in comparison to yet another two-day Holy jaunt planned for September of this year:

Pope Francis goes to Washington (and will reach an even bigger crowd than planned)

The setting for Pope Francis’ address to Congress in September just grew by giant proportions as the public will be able to watch the telecast from outside the U.S. Capitol building.

Pope Francis also wishes to make a “brief appearance” on the West Front of the Capitol building after he addresses a joint meeting of Congress on September 24, House Speaker John Boehner’s office announced Wednesday morning.

The speech will be broadcast live to the public outside the West Front of the U.S. Capitol building, and an “inauguration-like setting” on the steps of the Capitol is planned for the event, the Washington Post reported.

[And here’s a few coincidences I found somewhat curious to say the least: -my bold hro]

Speaker Boehner first extended the invite to Pope Francis in March of 2014. The Vatican accepted the invitation in February.

“It is with reverence and admiration that I have invited Pope Francis, as head of state of the Holy See and the first Pope to hail from the Americas, to address a joint meeting of the United States Congress,” Speaker Boehner stated in a formal invitation.

Both Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) expressed their anticipation of the papal visit.

Pope Francis has renewed the faith of Catholics worldwide and inspired a new generation of people, regardless of their religious affiliation, to be instruments of peace. In the spirit of the namesake of San Francisco, St. Francis of Assisi, Pope Francis’ universal message of love and compassion speaks to millions around the world,” Rep. Pelosi stated.

The article also notes that Obama will be hosting a “welcoming ceremony” for the Pope on the “South Lawn” – on which there may (or may not!) be a rose garden! What the article does not mention, however, is whether or not Boehner’s original 2014 invite preceded any official blessing by Obama.

I’m not quite sure what the protocol is; however, considering the humongous fuss Obama and Pelosi succeeded in making – several mountains out of a single molehill, if ever there was one – when Boehner invited Israel’s Netanyahu to address Congress earlier this year, the kindest thing one can say is that it’s … well, a very flexible protocol which (not unlike much that emanates from the mouth and/or keyboard of this most un-Presidential of US Presidents) depends very much on the whims of Obama and/or his coterie of “advisors”.

One would have hoped that those who advise – and/or write for – the Pope would know better. Alas … considering the Papal plans and pronouncements to date (e.g. on climate change and the PLO) … the view from here is that clearly, they do not.

Be that as it may … here’s my vote for “image of the day” [Source]:

And on a few somewhat related notes of the glaringly missing kind … While the Pope and Obama continue their symbolic and symbiotic trips of the light fantastic …

It is perhaps worth noting that yet another dynamic duo – in this instance the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)’s head honcho, Christiana <aka twinkletoes> Figueres and her designated “helper”, former IPCC-nik Joseph <the only thing that counts is numbers> Alcamo took to the HuffPo to share their words of wisdom on the eve of a July 7-10 “International Scientific Conference” being held in Paris, under the (presumed) auspices of a group that calls itself “Our Common Future Under Climate Change”.

If you are looking for a word-salads that bore (and conveniently ignore the far more clear and present dangers noted at the top of this post) be sure to take your mouse to the source of this oh-so-inspiring pic:

I would call this the charge of the blight brigade. YMMV

I would call this the charge of the blight brigade. YMMV

Brace yourselves, folks! My guess is that on the “climate” and “sustainability” fronts en route to Paris in December … we ain’t seen nothin’ yet:-(
