UNEP recycling Pachauri … already?!

08/21/2015 – Please note update below.

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), as I have previously noted, is an ever-expanding unchartered body under the “leadership” of head honcho, Achim Steiner.

One of the UNEP’s many, many “children” is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC); in this instance, IPCC parenthood is “shared” with another UN body, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) whose head honcho is Michel <There. Is. No. Pause> Jarraud – an assertion that, notwithstanding all evidence to the contrary, Jarraud shares with (at least) one of the candidates (Dr. Chris Field) who aspires to be the next Chair of the IPCC. Voting will take place in mid-October of this year.

If you are not a regular reader of this blog or that of Donna Laframboise, amongst others, you might have missed the … well, very quiet (albeit far too belated) resignation of Rajendra Pachauri, as the (far too longstanding) Chair of the IPCC, in mid-February of this year.

On the IPCC front, as Australia’s Tony Thomas reminds us in a recent article, Pachauri was quickly replaced by the oh-so-erudite and informed Ismail El Gizouli who hails from Sudan.

But – as is his wont – sometime in July, Pachauri – with probably more than a little help from his PR people, who for some strange reason were also acting for the TERI board – changed his story: His latest and greatest speculation was that all his troubles could have been due to the efforts of … wait for it … “climate skeptics”! Really, folks … how old and stale is that diversionary excuse, eh?!

It has as much credibility as his original “claim” to the effect that his many thousands of messages to the young, female employee on whom he was attempting to foist his unwanted attentions must have been sent by one of the several people who shared his electronic devices. Even his lawyers didn’t buy that one and they changed that story PDQ!

Nonetheless, in the “changing his story” department, Pachauri definitely has “form”, as the Brits would say. Hey, just like the UNEP and its arms, elbows, hands and fingers, I can “recycle”, too! Watch Pachauri’s mouth folks, as his feet marched right into it between Nov. 9, 2009 and May 14, 2010:

Nov. 9, 2009:

“Let someone publish the data in a decent credible publication. I am sure IPCC would then accept it, otherwise we can just throw it into the dustbin.”

Apr. 20, 2010:

AR4 cited approximately 18,000 peer-reviewed publications. It also included a limited amount of gray (or non-peer-reviewed) literature

May 14, 2010:

He said the media and other sections of society had misunderstood the role of such information, labelling it grey literature, “as if it was some form of grey muddied water flowing down the drains”.

Whom does one believe, eh?! Pachauri then, Pachauri now … or Pachauri never?! YMMV, but my vote goes to Pachauri never. The UNEP machers, I’m inclined to suspect, may well be on their way to taking a somewhat different view!

You see, on the Pachauri now front, a few days ago [h/t DennisA] one of the Indian papers reported that:

Pachauri, accused in a sexual harassment case, in his application moved on Tuesday said that as a renowned scientist on global climate change, he was scheduled to deliver a lecture on a report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) at the International Ecosystem Management Partnership (IEMP) in China from August 22-28.

Afterwards, he said, he was also scheduled to attend a meeting in Tokyo.

UPDATE 08/21/2015: To the surprise of very few, I suspect, for whatever reason [h/t DAmbler] the Delhi court has granted Pachauri permission to travel.

Couldn’t the IPCC find someone else, i.e. at the very least, someone who actually still holds a position with the IPCC?!

Oh, well … considering the above, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see him show up at some point, in the not too distant future, in the ranks of The Elders … just like Ireland’s Mary Robinson, the doyenne who gave the world such “leadership” via her chairmanship of the utterly disgraceful 2001 Durban Conference on so-called “Human Rights”.

Pachauri would fit in with that crowd of very tarnished luminaries, just like the proverbial dirty old shirt, eh?! Meanwhile, back in the real world there are hundreds of thousands of refugees. In no small measure, their state is due to the inactions of the UN, along with the utter ineptitude of US President Obama and his cohorts – about whom neither any established body of the UN, nor the closely affiliated recycling machine known as The Elders, seem to give – as my late father would have said – a tinker’s damn.

  1. That IEMP meeting Pachauri’s meant to be attending right now seems somewhat elusive. I can’t find any information about it on the IEMP website’s News or Events pages. Google News, Twitter and UNEP itself all appear to be rather reticent on the subject, as well.

Also, I’ve just checked UNEP’s Calendar page and can’t find anything there, either, although the search function doesn’t seem to be working – looking under Ecosystem Management for August 2015 yields “An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator.”

It’s as if curious aliens have abducted the entire meeting and all its participants. As good a theory as any.. :)

    • Many thanks, Alex … you’ve posted my “findings” (or, more to the point, conspicuous lack thereof!) on this mysterious gathering of the great and the good in China – to which the UNEP/IPCC could apparently find no one other than Pachauri as a designated “representative” (and/or facsimile thereof) – before I had a chance to confirm and post here:-)

And even though, as you may recall, I am not a scifi aficionado, I must confess that your working hypothesis may well have some validity! Well, at the very least more than one is likely to find emanating from Pachauri’s keyboard … or that of his personal PR pumpers! [PPP’s for short] ;-)
